BLEACH Volume 49 : The word "kimi"

I've seen some people who are speculating that Ichigo's poem is referring to Zangetsu, since the word "kimi" can be use for a neutral gender.

here's an explanation from someone about the word "kimi"

Yes it can be used for that as well. Kimi in itself isn't used solely for females and combined with the use of boku it almost sounds as if its a child talking. Kimi can be used for social equals or someone who is inferior in rank but very familar with. Nonetheless, kimi isn't really a 'special' gendered pronoun when it comes to Japanese as its used for informal conversations mostly, so why any shipper is getting worked up by this is quite sad really.

Besides, I have shown this to a couple of Japanese speakers and they confirm it seems rather gender-neutral to claim anything.

No you are misunderstanding kimi, as it is not used strictly from boy to girl (both genders can use it) and is used in informal conversations and people of higher rank too lower. It can be used for someone younger or older or in a sarcastic manner. Furthermore, the fact 'boku' was used makes it harder to claim that this was a convo that was strictly male to female as boku is typically childlike and used by young boys. Boku and Kimi are not gendered Japanese pronouns so you are wrong in your assumptions.

A/N :

Since I am not someone who will just believe in the words that was being told to me,or seen from one place (not that I care about the majority's opinion, because I definitely don't just follow the majority).I made my own research about this.

Here's what some people (not talking about BLEACH) that LIVES in Japan, not just SPEAKING Japanese language, says to someone who is looking for an advice,as to which word is to use in a conversation. They are not talking about BLEACH,nor the volume 49 poem either.

Second person pronouns:

君 kimi (2nd.P) originally meant "lord."

僕 boku means "servant"; but while usually an informal 1stP, 僕 boku can also be a Second Person used to address small boys.

Based from this explanation, that means that this...

Yes it can be used for that as well. Kimi in itself isn't used solely for females and combined with the use of boku it almost sounds as if its a child talking

...and this.

Furthermore, the fact 'boku' was used makes it harder to claim that this was a convo that was strictly male to female as boku is typically childlike and used by young boys.

...is definitely not the case for the volume 49 poem, since the speaker (Ichigo) is referring to himself as "boku" which is the 1stP,and it can only be interpreted as being addressed to a "boy/kid" if it was referring to the 2ndP.If someone uses it to refer to himself, which is the 1stP,it was simply an informal way of addressing themselves.

And by the way, the reason why some people use "kimi" to younger people is because "kimi" could also mean "kid" but that’s a different kanji.

Two Kimi’s :
きみ = kid (as you can see, that’s written in Hiragana)
君 = you

In writing, you have to use the kanji kimi instead of writing it in Hiragana.. or else it might look like you mean "kid" instead of "you." I don’t know if there’s a kanji for kimi that means kid.. so if you write using Kimi, use kanji.

There are other meanings of Kimi but are written in different Kanji, of course. So I really tell you to use the kanji if you want to use Kimi that means you..

Since KT used the kanji 君 = you, that means that it isn't referring to a kid.In other words, the speaker in volume 49 poem is not referring to a kid either.

KIMI

Personally, one of my favourite pronouns. kimi has a kindly air to it, one that can be friendly and personal, caring and parental, or even romantic. It is very familiar. It is never used by a younger/lower-ranking person to address an older/higher-ranking person. Only those “superior” (or equal) in some way can use kimi. However, it’s definitely not hostile.

This word uses the same kanji as the suffix –kun and has somewhat the same feeling.

Commonly heard:

- parental sort of figure towards children/youths

- superiors (including military officers) towards subordinates

- young person towards other young people (roughly the same age or younger)

Often used in conjunction with boku, though also used with all other pronouns.

Which means that this...

No you are misunderstanding kimi, as it is not used strictly from boy to girl (both genders can use it) and is used in informal conversations and people of higher rank too lower. It can be used for someone younger or older or in a sarcastic manner.

...is true. However,as it says,it isn't only used by someone who is in higher rank to a lower. It can also be used as something friendly and personal, caring in a parental manner,or even used in a ROMANTIC way.It is not purely about addressing an underling (higher to lower rank),or a younger/same age as the speaker. It would only sound RUDE when being used to address someone who is older or in a higher rank than the speaker.

Also,did you know that...

Most Japanese classes focus on formal, "proper" language and tend to discourage colloquialisms. This is for good reason. The "polite" forms in Japanese are necessary in learning grammar and word order, especially for beginners where more plain forms of the language can be confusing.

This is the reason why,if you asked someone about the word "kimi",they will recommend you to use it with caution,or better not use it at all, especially when you are just a beginner.

Also...

Japanese, unlike English, allows all pronouns to be omitted from sentences when they can be inferred from context. In spite of this — or perhaps because of this — Japanese has far more pronouns than the average language. There are more than three dozen Japanese words that can be translated as "I/me"* and even more that can be translated as "you". Each of them makes a different statement about the "speaker's gender", age, social status, and relationship with the addressee(s). To capture a little of the flavor, English translations sometimes use "this (category of person)" — this little girl, this humble peasant, this Bad Ass.

Writers, naturally, take advantage of this. The "wrong" pronoun can be a moment for comedy (see Different for Girls); the specific choice can say a lot about the character speaking. And it's easy to avoid revealing characters' names, for whatever reason.

Note that, even more so than in most forms of media, the language used in anime is heavily stylized and quite different from the way actual Japanese people speak in real life. Take everything you hear in anime with a grain of salt — non-native speakers who learned their Japanese from anime are easy to spot.

Notice the part where it says that "writers naturally, take advantage of this",because it can be useful in writing a story,to avoid revealing characters names, can have the idea about their age status, relationship, etc.

That's why...

No!!! You can use it also to males or children. But, Kimi may address only a female in the words of songs/dramas/mangas.

And here's another explanation from someone

The language used in j-dramas is also not representative of how Japanese people speak in real life, scripted to fit the narrative and character relationships only, so I wouldn't use it as a tool for learning to speak Japanese.

But if you're listening/watching in Japanese, knowing the difference can be helpful.

Here is my explanation (all "you"s): (A/N : I only put the word"kimi" since it was the topic)

"kimi" can be used for familiars/nonfamiliars but I would avoid using it. Also, "kimi" is used in songs, etc. kind in a romantic way.

and...

Kimi
君 A somewhat informal but still polite second person pronoun used mostly by men when addressing their equals or younger men and women. Usually the pronoun used between boyfriends and girlfriends. Can be used as a honorific as well, pronounced kun.

Kimi
The Japanese word for "you" that is generally used in an endearing manner. Be careful not to use it when reffering to a person who is either your equal or above you, but kimi would be more appropriate for a lover or a child. For most situations use the word "anata."

After reading all those explanations,this...

Japanese as its used for informal conversations mostly, so why any shipper is getting worked up by this is quite sad really.

...person doesn't seem to research things thoroughly about the use of "kimi" in Japanese, especially, when we are talking about MANGA.Besides, using informal words in a conversation means that the person is close to the one that he/she is talking/referring with.In a sense, being worked up by the fact that "kimi" is being used for informal conversations, and is used for someone who is in a higher rank to lower,or is someone who is younger, and don't acknowledge the possibility,or maybe, just didn't know that it can also be used in a romantic way,is quite sad as well.

Ichigo didn't missed Rukia during the 17 months of her absence?

This is a response for grama.

Here's the link to this topic :

http://forums.mangafox.com/threads/246520-IchiHime-Vs.-IchiRuki-Version-3-Read-Post-1/page207

NOTE : I put my response on grama here in my blog, because I don't have much time typing and looking for the chapters and panels,I only have few minutes each day to post a comment,so I can only do this here without repeating everything, every time I logged in.I really liked putting the panels while I am explaining my opinion,so please just bear with me.

ARGUMENT :

Ichiruki : The volume 49 poem was about Rukia. Non IR fans japanese translators and japanese fans themselves said the one referred to was a female, Rukia. "Can I keep up with the speed of the world without you in it?" was about Rukia.

grama : that's interpretation. especially since ichigo in that book said that he doesn't miss rukia outright. there's no saying which one is telling the truth.....the poem or ichigo himself.

A/N :

The time that Ichigo said he doesn't miss Rukia outright,is this, right?

Now,how can we say if he's lying or not?

His expression says so,right? However, there are still some people who would like to interpret it another way.In that case, let's try to find another proof that Ichigo is lying when he said that.

grama :

don't you think it's kinda cold that she hasn't come back even once?
of course it is not! she isn't the representative of karakura town to begin with, it's normal for her not to come.

i bet you are going to say......ichigo is probably lying to his friend(Keigo) that he actually want her to come to see him.

A/N :

Did you noticed this?

Keigo is asking him about Rukia haven't visited even once, and Ichigo replied...

Ichigo is giving him reasons why Rukia won't visit the Karakura town.In other words,he is aware of the fact that she won't come and visit the Karakura town, yet still...

Why on earth is he thinking about exactly the same stuff earlier? He knew the reasons why Rukia won't visit there, but why is he still thinking of her not visiting there, though he knew the reasons why?Isn't that a sign of being in a denial state? He was thinking about it as well, but when Keigo asked him about it,he acted like he wasn't thinking about it at all, because there's no reason for doing so.Now,tell me he's not lying.

grama :

i'm fine with peace till i die. that's right. ..... i just dreamed of a life where i couldn't see them (ghosts......guess what shinigamis are in the category of what normal human being cannot see....where i couldn't see shinigami>>rukia is one of the shinigamis??).

am i now allowed to say that ichigo doesn't really miss rukia ....he just take things as it comes and goes?

A/N :

Actually, isn't this is what he said COMPLETELY?

Let's analyze his statements.

If you haven't noticed,Ichigo is talking about the "him" BEFORE.He said he never felt superiority because he could see spirits. Why do you think he feels that way?

It was because of this...

"I never once thought that I could make a living and help someone with it."

Ichigo at that time,do not see the importance of his ability. What is so special about it?He's just being able to see them.He couldn't see anything useful about it,he doesn't know that one day, that ability of his will be the thing that would make him someone who could protect and help the others.Since he couldn't see the purpose of having that ability...

"I just longed for a life where I couldn't see them"

That is what he always wished for ever since before he met Rukia. However, when he met Rukia and he became a shinigami,he had the taste of a life where he can use his ability to protect mountain loads of people (the thing that he never thought would be possible). Unfortunately, after his fight with Aizen,he lost that ability completely, which is his current situation in that chapter.

That's why he said lastly...

"And I finally got what I've always wanted"

Ichigo at that moment is reflecting on his previous feelings about having that ability (seeing spirits). His statement is not about the thing that he wanted at that moment.

Besides...

What is Ichigo's reaction when he was starting to lose that ability?

 Zooming in...

As you can see,Ichigo shows everyone that he was just fine with it,but look at his expression before he asked them if he could go outside. Is that how someone who really wanted to lose his ability to see spirits should look like?I doubt it,how about you?...

And for this part...

(ghosts......guess what shinigamis are in the category of what normal human being cannot see....where i couldn't see shinigami>>rukia is one of the shinigamis??).

Is this actually true?

Rukia : Don't look so sad.Even if you can no longer see me,I can still you.

Ichigo : What?That doesn't make me happy at all.And I wasn't making a sad face either.

Is this not a sad face?

I highly doubt that Ichigo is not sad,eh?

Also,you (grama) said...

also, muddling up with ichigo crying because he lost his power thanks to ginjou with feeling lost without power in the 17 months is not really a smart move….especially since the 17 months of powerlessness was him resigning to the fact that he doesn’t mind being lost his power as long as his friends are save while ginjou robbed him of the power that he worked for his friends(you have orihime flashback….no rukia flashback*victory sign*).

A/N :

If it's true that he was just fine without his power during the past 17 months,as long as his friends are safe, why does Chad here is saying that "You've been a sad sight since you lost your powers" No one is in danger during that time.It was only until 17 months 'til Ishida's attack,so...

Chad also pointed out that Ichigo probably thinks that he was hiding it.In other words,Ichigo is definitely in his denial/pretentious state.

In that case, based from what you said here...

if it is really the intentions of the author not to portray the character as telling the truth, he would validate his point (character not telling the truth) straightaway. it's obvious that the character is not being truthful to his friends especially when the friends point out.

Since  Chad pointed out that Ichigo is not fine being powerless,it's clear that he would never wish to lose his powers, that will make him unable to see spirits...

That's why,this...

i'm fine with peace till i die. that's right. ..... i just dreamed of a life where i couldn't see them (ghosts......guess what shinigamis are in the category of what normal human being cannot see....where i couldn't see shinigami>>rukia is one of the shinigamis??).

is a clearly misinterpreted part.Because this isn't Ichigo thinking about wanting not to see spirits again. It is Ichigo reflecting on his previous feelings of having the ability to see spirits.

For the last part...

he just take things as it comes and goes?

If Ichigo really is taking things as it comes and goes

Ichigo himself was surprised with his behavior as well,he must have thought that he have managed to move on without it,it was 'till then that he realized that he still haven't managed to get over with it.Along with this is Chad's conversation with Ichigo, where he said that Ichigo is trying to hide it (the panel that I put above).

Now,for this part...

grama :

but i want to point out something that upset me very much....it's the.....how do i say it...i'm not sure whether it's kubo tite's faults that made me upset or it's the ichiruki fans, i think it's both but personally i think more could be because fans' selective reading and logical comprehension. i find it very 'crazy/weird' whenever the ichiruki fans dismissed what ichigo is saying to himself to be a lie.....especially when ichigo said it aloud in his mind. no seriously, you really think that one could actually lie to himself, say the inobvious thing that he knows he himself cannot be lied? fine, we can allow some deception happened when one say to his friends, he doesn't want to be truthful with others...... but to himself??.....that person is certainly a mental case if he cannot be honest with himself. can you really live up with that....or in another words, would you still want to read on when you know ichigo isn't someone who is truthful to himself, especially when he is voicing his thoughts?

A/N :

This is what Ichigo thought in his mind...to himself...

And this...

i'm fine with peace till i die. that's right. ..... i just dreamed of a life where i couldn't see them (ghosts......guess what shinigamis are in the category of what normal human being cannot see....where i couldn't see shinigami>>rukia is one of the shinigamis??).

...I have already explained above, that Ichigo is reflecting his previous feelings regarding his ability to see spirits,so...yeah,he wasn't lying there.Ichigo really didn't liked his ability to see spirits before he met Rukia.Chad confirms it too, that Ichigo is hiding it,so...Ichigo is definitely not happy without his powers. In other words, why would he wish to lose that ability,if the truth is,he really liked having it now?

grama :

i understand that ichigo would probably not tell out the real thing to rukia as in 'i love you/ i miss you' straight to the face to prevent awkwardness. but behind her back? if he really really miss her? (noticed, i used really, really miss her to note deepness of missing her) he should probably voice it out to the readers.

Like I have shown from the first part of this essay,Ichigo is thinking about Rukia not visiting to the Karakura town even once. However, when Keigo asked him about the same thing,he acted that he have never thought about it,because there's no reason to.Ichigo didn't admit to Keigo that he was thinking about that as well,though...like you (grama) said,Rukia wasn't there, she won't hear him, there's no reason to be shy admitting that he was thinking about it too?The same could be said for Ichigo not telling him that he missed Rukia, even if he does.Rukia's presence is not the issue,it was Ichigo's denial state is the issue.

Done with this subject.

I hope you won't give me this...

grama :

ichigo missed rukia....i never said that he didn't miss her......i just said that ichigo didn't feel lonely and perhaps NEVER REALLY, REALLY, REALLY missed her because he is confident that he's going to meet her.

A/N :

This is what you said...

that's interpretation. especially since ichigo in that book said that he doesn't miss rukia outright. there's no saying which one is telling the truth.....the poem or ichigo himself.

Then you said...

i never said that ichigo doesn't miss rukia....he said it in the book.

When you said Ichigo said it in the book, and that,he said it outright,it sounds like...how can I say it...it sounds like you are saying that it is what the manga is trying to tell us.

Then you bring all this...

don't you think it's kinda cold that she hasn't come back even once?
of course it is not! she isn't the representative of karakura town to begin with, it's normal for her not to come.

i bet you are going to say......ichigo is probably lying to his friend(Keigo) that he actually want her to come to see him.

i'm fine with peace till i die. that's right. ..... i just dreamed of a life where i couldn't see them (ghosts......guess what shinigamis are in the category of what normal human being cannot see....where i couldn't see shinigami>>rukia is one of the shinigamis??).

am i now allowed to say that ichigo doesn't really miss rukia ....he just take things as it comes and goes?

by the way.....i always wanted to know ichigo could have probably used the word 'maybe' to show that maybe he does feel lonely or not. instead it's a hell no. why is it a bit difficult for him to express how he feels if it is true that he loves rukia? you need to pretend that you don't love her when you actually do? if rukia is around, i understand why he needs to pretend and not say outrightly to her that he missed her. but when she is not around.....does he have to? my only conclusion was perhaps the loneliness was never really felt for him to not say so.

even at the beginning, pre-ss arc we have ichigo's mind saying.....i should try and avoid getting close with her.
this is the reason why i don't see it as a feasible pairing.

Judging by how you keep on showing us panels,it's clear that those are the reasons why you think he doesn't missed Rukia.Seriously, try to put yourself in our situation...

Then,later...you started to say something like this...

and no....i didn't say that ichigo doesn't miss her as close friend. i just said that the poem doesn't say of ichigo and rukia, it's more of ichigo and orihime. saying the poem is as if talking about ichigo and orihime does not translate to ichigo not missing rukia. and yes, i did prove in the manga that ichigo in his inner mind did say that he doesn't mind not seeing ghosts (or shinigamis, which that includes rukia). because he didn't at all feel lonely. and not feeling lonely doesn't really translate to not missing her. he got other friends and family that can keep him company.

You didn't explain your reason for bringing up those panels. Not only that, instead of saying that he's just not that lonely without her, what you always say is that...it is what he said to himself,so why think that he was lying?Or that,Chad and Orihime didn't mentioned that he really missed Rukia...PROBABLY,BECAUSE HE REALLY DIDN'T MISS RUKIA.Or...why tell a lie, though Rukia wasn't there, there's no reason to be shy.Ichigo is saying it in his inner mind,we are asking him to be truthful...there's a lot more.

Really,if you are in our situation, will you understand that the person is just trying to explain, that Ichigo is just not that lonely, and not that he/she was saying that he didn't missed Rukia?

Well,in any case,since you said...

ichigo missed rukia....i never said that he didn't miss her......i just said that ichigo didn't feel lonely and perhaps NEVER REALLY, REALLY, REALLY missed her because he is confident that he's going to meet her.

This means that the argument about Ichigo not missing Rukia is already done, since we all agree that he did missed her.The only thing that is up for a debate is...whether Ichigo does REALLY,REALLY,REALLY MISSED RUKIA.

Ichigo's problems : SS arc vs HM arc

Ichigo's problem at the SS arc vs HM arc. There are some people that says,it wasn't fair to compare Ichigo's behavior at the SS arc to HM arc, because at the HM arc Ichigo is facing a lot of problems unlike with the SS,which his only problem is,how he will rescue Rukia. When I think about it,is it really something like that?

I'll try to elaborate Ichigo's problems and depressions from those arcs...

Let's begin with...

SS arc

At the SS arc,is rescuing Rukia,is the only problem that Ichigo was carrying inside himself? Is it the only problem that he was facing there? If that's what you think,I guess you are definitely missing a lot of things.

Always keep this in mind...

As much as it is true, that rescuing Rukia is the only visible problem at the SS arc, readers need to understand that, along with her execution, and Ichigo's will to save her, there are lots of problems that was created because of her execution.

Ichigo's problems during the SS arc are...

1. Guilt. The woman/shinigami who risked her life in order to protect him,and lends her powers to him,so he can be able to protect his family,is going to be executed because of violating the law of the SS (which saved him and his family). In other words, the woman whom he was in debt, the woman whom he owes his life, and his family's,is going to die because of saving them. Also,Rukia is powerless, she cannot fight to protect herself, and it is also because of him.Though he didn't intend to do anything like that, still,it was the result of lending her powers to him (he drained almost all of her powers),which add to the weight of his guilt. Naturally, whoever it was in that situation will bear an unparalleled guilt in their hearts. If it wasn't because of him,she will not be executed to die. It's a huge thing actually. It's something that is definitely hard to overcome, especially, when she was taken away right in front of him,and he couldn't do anything to stop it.For what reason do you think Ichigo reacted like this?

Most importantly,he behaved like this...

2. Inadequacy. As you can see,Ichigo felt inadequacy for not being able to protect the woman who saved his life and his family's.Moreover,he felt an even more frustration, for being protected, instead of being the one who should protect her. Also, the shinigami powers that Rukia gave to him,was destroyed by Byakuya,so he thought that he can never ever be able to save her,no matter what. That's why, when he was saved by Urahara,he felt like he didn't wanted to be saved. In other words,Ichigo lost his will to live (based from Urahara's interpretation to his reaction).

3. Lack of Battle Experience.Ichigo doesn't have enough battle experience.Logically thinking,he should be bothered by that.Ichigo doesn't know how many strong shinigamis are there in the SS,and how strong they really are (he doesn't know that their strength is 5 times stronger in the SS,compared to the HW).

4. Worry for Rukia's well being.Ichigo is also bothered about what he should do,after rescuing Rukia. Will he take her with him,and bring her back to the HW,so he could protect her? Will he separate her from her family and friends?Apparently,Ichigo is also worried for Rukia's well being, which adds up to the weight of his guilt as well.

5. Fight against the law of the SS.There might be someone, who will say that Ichigo is not under to any kind of laws at the SS,since he isn't an official shinigami,so that argument is irrelevant. However,Ichigo is not actually the problem,it was Rukia, just so you know.Rukia is a shinigami, and is absolutely under the law of the SS.Rukia, violated the law,and she needs to be punished.Since Ichigo wanted to save her,he'll definitely have to shatter the law of the SS.

Based from the given situation at the SS Arc,Ichigo's problems are all centered to Rukia.Perhaps that's the reason why people used to think that rescuing Rukia is his only problem during that time.

HM arc

1. Ichigo's inner hollow.

Actually,Ichigo's problem with his hollow, first appeared during his fight with Byakuya at the Sokyouku hill...

As you can see,the hollow did took over during his fight with Byakuya. However, since Ichigo succeeded in shoving him off, most of the readers used to think, that the hollow during that time,is weaker than the one that showed up at the Dome, but,is it really the reason why he was able to shove him off during that time?

Anyways, because that fight had a positive outcome, most of the readers didn't realized that it brought something horrible to Ichigo as well. What is it?The hollow...readers should also understand that it was the first time that Ichigo was devoured by his hollow. That was the first time that he became aware of the hollow's existence,do you honestly think that he didn't get bothered by it,during his fight with Byakuya?Seriously?Even after seeing what he have done to Byakuya?Logically thinking,he was bothered by the hollow. However,Ichigo is so determined to win that fight in his own way,to be able to change Rukia's fate, that's why he succeeded in shoving him off.He wanted to make Byakuya to realize, that he should be protecting Rukia,no matter what, since he was her brother. You don't believe me?

Look closely...

Judging by his own statement,it's clear that, after seeing him first time during his fight with Byakuya,Ichigo kept on thinking about the hollow.Normally,Ichigo would definitely be scared, knowing that he have a hollow inside him.Hollows are violent creatures, that's why,he thought that he may lose the things that are dear to him,if he didn't do anything about it.During his fight with Byakuya,he doesn't have the time to think about it,because he is more focused on saving Rukia, that's why,he only have the time to think about it,after the rescue mission.

You know,if you are thinking too much about something,it can create a hallucination, which is probably the reason, why Ichigo kept on hearing the hollow's voice,he's being paranoid.Ichigo doesn't understand why the hollow kept on appearing (read here),that's why he was so scared, and makes him think about it,over and over, which leads to his lack of wanting to be engaged in a fight. Therefore,it caused him a lot of failures.Because Ichigo is bothered by the hollow,he couldn't concentrate in fighting,he always thought that he might get devoured by the hollow. As a result, his attention is divided in fighting with the enemy, and trying to shove the hollow off his mind.Because of this,Ichigo failed to protect his friends, which caused him an even more lack of wanting to be engaged in a fight, and throws himself into depression, because of his failures to protect his nakamas. In fact, after his failure to protect his nakamas,Ichigo, never went in his shinigami form, ever again, until Rukia gave him her "The man in my heart" speech.

Other than this...Ichigo's problems at the HM arc are...

2. Orihime's rescue.Actually,Orihime's rescue is not the main problem of Ichigo in this particular arc,it is only one of his problems, but his main problem in this arc,is his conflict with his inner hollow.Orihime's rescue only played the part to emphasize Ichigo's conflicts with his hollow.

3. The Karakura invasion. This is the main plan of Aizen,to be able to create a Royal Key.

Based from the given situation for this particular arc,Ichigo's problems are actually centered to his hollow. That's right,Ichigo's hollow is the center of all his problems.Ichigo only have the trouble in solving the other problems (Orihime's rescue, and the Krakura invasion) because of his hollow.

Now,after realizing Ichigo's problems in those arcs, can someone tell me...does Ichigo's problem in the HM,is really something that is way heavier than his problem during the SS arc?You know,if you really tried to see things equally, you will realize, that the number of his problems is not the thing that caused him an even more depression and pressure, which caused all of his failures, and the reason why he behaves differently, during his rescue mission for Rukia, compared to Orihime's.Do you know what it is?It was...

Ichigo's way of reacting with his problems.

SS arc

Rukia was arrested and was sentenced to death because of him, when he thought that there's no way that he can follow her,and save her,Ichigo lose his will to live, because he couldn't bear the feeling of guilt. However, after hearing from Urahara that he can help him with his problem,Ichigo wanted to act immediately, and follow her, though he wasn't even fully healed from his injuries, and is also powerless during that time being. That is Ichigo's way of dealing with the situation.

Ichigo never cared as to how many shinigamis, and how strong the enemies could be,as long as they tried to stop him,he'll beat them all. That statement from Ichigo doesn't actually implies confidence, just like what Renji, and most of the readers thought here...

What his statement actually means,is this...

Ichigo,is not implying that he can definitely save her.He doesn't hold the confidence that everyone thought he have, during his rescue mission for Rukia. For your information, what Ichigo's words actually means when he said..."he doesn't care how many Vice Captains are there,or how many Captains are there, and most importantly,he doesn't care how strong they really are" is because, the only thing that he knew, and cares the most,is the fact the he NEEDS to save her.Ichigo set his mind, that he shouldn't fail.In other words,Ichigo is that desperate to save her. That's right,Ichigo's words showed his desperation to save Rukia, and he's going to do everything to make it happen.

When a person is so desperate to achieve something, they became willing to do anything to reach that goal, even the things that even them, were unable to believe in what they can actually do.Ichigo was in an urge to save Rukia, and no one can stop him from doing so,that's how Ichigo reacted, when he was about to lose Rukia.Because Ichigo is so desperate, and so persistent in saving her,Ichigo, never cared as to how many strong opponents will try to stop him,he doesn't care about his lack of battle experience,he doesn't care whether he was in a unfamiliar world with different kind of rules. The only thing that he kept on thinking is,he needs to save Rukia,no matter what, because of this,Ichigo managed to stand up,no matter how many times he was about to fall.Ichigo, kept on refusing deaths, and defeats, because he's that desperate to save Rukia, which gave him the determination to win the fights,in his own way,so he could change her fate.

On the other hand, how does Ichigo reacted with his problem, concerning his hollow?

HM arc

The main problem that Ichigo had in this particular arc,is the hollow inside him.Ichigo thought that he may lose everything that is so dear to him, because of it.How does Ichigo react with this problem?Ichigo chose to hide it from everyone,he was afraid that he may lose them, once they found out.Ichigo,in this arc, unlike how he reacted to his problem with his guilt, during the SS arc,Ichigo falls in his despair.

Note : Despair,is losing hope,it is different from the word desperate,so do not be confused.Desperate is the kind of state that may come before or after despair. It's like,a person suffered from despair, and he/she becomes desperate,or a person is so desperate to achieve something, but still, that person failed to succeed,so he falls into despair.I wonder if I explained it clear ^.^'>

For the people who will try to down play Ichigo's character from this arc.Don't say that his behavior shows his lack of trust or confidence with his friends, because he thought that he may lose them,if they found out.In fact, that is the main purpose of this scene...

Do you see now?Ichigo's fear comes into reality, the moment that Orihime showed that scared expression to Ichigo. That is the very first time that we saw his sad face (in front of his nakama),after all those times that he was carrying it to himself. At that very moment,Orihime just proved to him, that his fear, can actually become a possibility.Though she did cheered him up,after Nel's statements about Ichigo's suffering, and it somehow, showed that he still have a hope that he'll regain his friendship with everyone, just in case.Still,it wasn't enough to reassure him.

Ichigo in this arc,is so desperate to maintain the things that are dear to him. When he failed to protect his nakamas after his fight with Yammy,Ichigo falls into deeper loss of hope. However,Rukia came back, and gave him his resolve, then Ichigo finally decided to do something about it,and went to the Vizaards to train. However, the moment that he came to the HM,and saw Orihime's scared expression,Ichigo's fear becomes stronger, because he realized, that it can actually happen.

Now,after realizing the main problems of Ichigo from those arcs,I want to ask something.Does Ichigo's problem during the SS arc,is really something that is not as heavy as his problem at the HM?Does Ichigo's guilt, should be taken lightly, compared to his problem with his hollow?Although,I can see why people used to think, that is was something that cannot be anything heavier, than his problems with the HM.I thought that way, because there are people who are using the number of his problems at the HM,as an argument, that it wasn't fair to compare the two.Probably, one of those reasons why it's weight just suddenly diminished from the readers POV,is the fact that the SS arc have a positive outcome,or rather should I say...Ichigo is mentally stronger at the SS,compared to the HM.However,is this actually true?

Look closely....

Ichigo : It's my fault that Rukia is going to die...I know that already.THAT'S WHY I HAVE TO SAVE HER!

Apparently,Ichigo is definitely suffering.People should have seen that from his words, and his behavior from that scene.Ichigo's determination to win, comes from his desperate will to save Rukia.Ichigo is so desperate, because he didn't know what else to do,if Rukia died because of saving him and his family.

Let's make things simple...

Why does Ichigo is so bothered by the hollow inside him? What is he scared of?...Ichigo is scared of losing everything that is dear to him, because of the hollow. That is what Ichigo kept on thinking during the Arrancar to HM arc.On the other hand...Ichigo almost lost his family,if it weren't because of Rukia, during the pre SS arc,it's the other way round, right?Because of his hollow,he might lose everything that is dear to him, whereas, because of Rukia,he was able to protect those people who are dear to him. Both problems, are rooted from his will to protect those that are dear to him,so technically, they are just equal.I am talking about the weight of the problem.

To make things a lot easier to understand...

This is how Ichigo behaved when facing his problems...

SS arc

Guilt. If Rukia is going to be executed, then he'll come and save her,and won't let her die. He'll do everything,to make sure that she will be saved.

Inadequacy. If the problem is his powerlessness, then he'll do anything to have that power,so he could save Rukia...

even this...

Isn't he cute? (*ゝ_●・)σ

And this...

I suppose, everyone already knew how Ichigo suffered a lot,in order to have his shinigami powers,to be able to save Rukia, right?

Byakuya's PRIDE.If the problem is Byakuya's PRIDE,that's why he was supporting Rukia's execution, then he'll step on it,and destroy it,for him to realize, that he should protect Rukia, instead of killing her...

The Law of the SS.If the problem is the Law of the SS,then he'll do everything to shatter that Law,just like what he have said here...

Does everyone sees it now?Ichigo is always aiming to eliminate anything that might be the reason, why Rukia is going to be killed.Ichigo is always doing everything to shatter the source of all the problems, that may hinder his mission to save Rukia.

On the other hand, how did Ichigo deals with his problem with his hollow?

HM arc

Ichigo in this arc, never acted the same as he does during the SS arc.Even after hearing from Hirako that he can help him with his problem concerning his hollow,Ichigo didn't do anything about it.Even after failing to protect his nakamas,Ichigo only falls in his despair, and still not doing anything about his problem, unlike how he acted immediately to have his shinigami powers to be able to save Rukia at the SS.In fact,Ichigo still didn't do anything about it,even after this...

Ichigo, have only decided to act, after this thing have happened...

Ichigo isn't doing anything, even though he already knew that he can come to Hirako for a help, not even when he failed to protect Chad,Tatsuki, and Orihime, against Yamy. But when GJ hurts Rukia, that is the only time that he felt the need to do something.

Based from the given situations in the manga,it seems that Ichigo's reaction is always different, when the subject is Rukia. It's true that he cared for all his nakamas, hence he was so depressed fro not being able to protect them,to the point that he gets afraid of turning into his shinigami form ever again.Despite the fact that his feelings for both situations are the same (nakamas, and Rukia getting hurt),his actions/resolve differ, when it was about Rukia,or rather should I say,she always plays as the last straw for Ichigo, that will push him to do something about the problem.

Judging by the given circumstances and situations, the argument about the number of problems is actually irrelevant. The reason why Ichigo behaved completely different during Orihime's rescue, compared to Rukia's,is definitely not because of the number of problems that he was facing during that time.Ichigo behaved differently, according to the subject of his problems, not by the numbers.
